Complete desalination plants - plant technology

Some technical processes and laboratories require water that is almost completely free of dissolved substances and has a conductivity of up to 0.1 µS/cm. Such process water is generally referred to as fully desalinated water, or deionized water for short. Among other things, the feed water for steam turbine systems must generally be extremely pure in order to avoid damage to the turbine blades.

A supply of deionized water is usually part of the standard equipment in analytical laboratories in order to be able to carry out wet-chemical analyzes without unwanted impurities. In some cases, it can be useful to fill heating circuits with deionized water in order to be able to almost completely rule out deposits in the system.

The standard process for generating deionized water is via ion exchange resins. Acidic cation exchange resins bind cations (positively charged ions) and basic anion exchange resins bind anions (negatively charged ions). The ion exchange resins can only remove a defined amount of ions from the water. When the capacity of the resins is exhausted, they have to be regenerated in order to reach their original state and be available again for the treatment process.

In large-scale plants, this can be done in two filters connected in series. In these plants, the resins are regenerated on site.

For smaller quantities of up to 3 m³/h, however, the use of a so-called mixed bed is recommended. Here, both types of resin are mixed in a stainless steel filter cartridge and the desalination process is carried out in one filter pass. These VE cartridges are usually regenerated by us on site when their capacity is exhausted.

Stainless steel VE cartridges are available in standardized sizes. Several VE cartridges can also be connected to one another in order to filter larger volume flows (parallel connection) or to be able to guarantee optimal water quality (series connection).

GB Chembridge International offers you all solutions for the production of fully desalinated water. We design and construct VE systems with separate anion and cation exchangers individually for your process.
